If you’re reading this article you’ve probably read 100’s of articles on the topic of weight loss. In this article I’m not going to tell you how to lose weight, because chances are you probably have a basic knowledge on how to lose weight. The average person that comes to me for weight loss coaching generally pose the knowledge on how to lose weight, their struggle is sticking to their goals. I’m going to give you 5 practical tips I incorporate in not only helping my clients achieve their weight loss goals, but I also use to reach my personal goals.
Tip #1: Adopt the right mindset
“Be comfortable being uncomfortable.” It’s a truism that must be accepted before any lasting change can take effect. When setting out to make lasting change, not just in weight loss but in any change that you’re trying to make in you life, your going into uncharted territory, so you’re going to face being uncomfortable. The key is to face it head on and accept it as part of the process.
Tip#2 Make the necessary sacrifices
“The only question to ask yourself is how much are you willing to sacrifice to achieve success?” Larry Flynt
The law of sacrifice says that you cannot get something you want, without giving up something in return. Write down 5 things you are willing to sacrifice in order to reach your fitness goal, and make the necessary sacrifices.
Tip#3 Hack your environment
It’s a lot easier to stick to your goal by setting up your environment to make it conducive to achieving your goal. For example: Keep food items that you might be tempted to binge out the house, keep fruits visible to make them more accessible, write your goal and place it on your fridge and next to your bathroom mirror so that it’s visible and it’s constantly at the forefront of your conscious.
Tip#4 Keep a fitness journal.
There’s plenty of great reasons to keep a fitness journal, accountability, setting and tracking goals, tracking nutrition, and workouts are just a few. Whether you use your phone, computer, or simple note book keeping a fitness journal is an underrated tool in helping people stick to their weight loss goals.
Tip#5 Outsmart your future self
It’s easy to plan for the future when you’re motivated, but the trick is to get your future self to execute on those plans. Decide on the activities that are required to reach your goals and manually set a calendar and alarm to notify you when it’s time to perform the activity. When setting out to adopt a new habit, or habits you don’t want to rely on motivation or willpower, because neither last. From grocery shopping, to meal prepping, to exercising. Set a schedule and stick to it. After a few months of sticking to a preset schedule, and if you’ve applied the previous activities you should starting noticing results, making it easier for the habits that you’ve established easier to stick.
